Diageo India has unveiled a major revamp of McDowell’s No 1, combining an upgraded whisky blend with a redesigned bottle and a more premium brand identity as it seeks to appeal to a new generation of consumers.
The transformation marks a significant repositioning of one of India’s largest whisky brands, which sells over 30 million cases annually.
The company said the move goes beyond a packaging refresh, with the new offering retaining the brand’s established Scotch cues while adding greater emphasis on quality, craftsmanship and drinking experience.
The revamped McDowell’s No 1 is positioned in the mass-premium segment, where Diageo sees changing consumer expectations around value.
According to the company, consumers are increasingly looking beyond price and seeking products that combine quality and refinement with an aspirational social image.
At the centre of the relaunch is an upgraded blend comprising select imported Scotch, Indian malts and premium grain spirits. The whisky is matured in select oak and American barrels and blended across India and Scotland, with the company claiming that the process delivers additional smoothness.
The new liquid has undergone more than 100 quality checks. Diageo describes it as having aromas of vanilla, grain sweetness and mellow malt, with notes of matured wood and sweet spice. The palate combines gentle sweetness with malty, woody and vanilla notes, followed by a clean finish with hints of vanilla cream.
Ruchira Jaitly, Chief Marketing Officer, Diageo India said consumer perceptions of value were changing, with quality, craftsmanship and experience becoming increasingly important alongside affordability.
The company said it validated its consumer insights through research involving more than 10,000 consumers across 11 markets. The findings, it said, were used to evolve McDowell’s No.1 while retaining the familiarity and trust built by the brand over decades.
Diageo said the relaunch is aimed at redefining the mass-premium whisky segment while maintaining McDowell’s No 1’s accessibility and broad consumer appeal.
