US President Donald Trump has announced that he has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, less than two hours before his deadline for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face widespread attacks on its civilian infrastructure. Iran has accepted the ceasefire.
Trump posted on social medai on Tuesday that the deal was subject to Iran’s agreement to pause its blockade of oil and gas supplies through the strait, which typically handles about one-fifth of global oil shipments.
“This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”
Trump said Iran had presented a 10-point proposal that was a “workable basis” for negotiations and that he expected an agreement to be “finalized and consummated” during the two-week ceasefire.
“Based on conversations with Prime Minister and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks.
“This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!
Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated.
“On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution.”
The White House’s official account on X has now shared Trump’s TruthSocial post bout Iran as an official statement.

US broadcaster CNN is reporting that Israel has also agreed to the ceasefire, citing an unnamed White House official, in a report that has also now been carried by Israel’s public broadcaster Kan.
There has been no official confirmation from Israeli or US officials.
Iran responded shortly afterwards that it accepted the ceasefire, mediated by Pakistan, and that it will allow safe passage of ships along the Hormuz with the coordination of its armed forces.
A statement released by Iran’s Foreign Affairs Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi said his country’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed the ceasefire proposal.
The statement said that the ceasefire agreement was reached with the approval of Iran’s new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.

Pakistan has been acting as a mediator in the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
Trump has named the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif as one of the people he has held conversations with that have led to this conditional agreement for a ceasefire.
The country’s Field Marshal Asim Munir is also named in his Truth Social post. They “requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran”, Trump writes.
All of this is coming just a little under an hour before the deadline that Trump had set was to expire.
