The apex food regulator has urged states to intensify inspections and carry out special enforcement drives against the use of prohibited ripening agents.
The food safety commissioners of all states, and regional directors of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) were asked to maintain a strict vigil over fruit markets and mandis and storage facilities.
This is being done to curb the use of calcium carbide, used for ripening mangoes. The chemical causes mouth ulcers and also has carcinogenic properties.
