As many as 17 people were killed in a massive fire that broke out near Charminar in Hyderabad in the early hours of Sunday.
“About nine suffered burn injuries and the rest succumbed to asphyxiation,” a senior fire tending officer told .
The fire broke out in a jewellery store adjacent to Charminar. According to fire tending officials, the fire originated in the ground floor of the three-storied building which housed the jewellery store.
“There are 11 fire tenders working at the spot,” a senior official said.

Responding to the incident, Bharat Rashtra Samithi working president K T Rama Rao wrote, “Extremely shocked and pained!! Details emerging out of Gulzar House fire tragedy in Old City are very sad. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of the tragedy. Wishing a speedy recovery to those injured. Hoping and praying that this fire will be contained very soon”. Meanwhile, state president and Union Minister G Kishan Reddy claimed the number of casualties rose because fire tenders were late to reach the spot.
However, according to senior fire tending officials, fire tenders had reached the spot “within 15 minutes of the incident getting reported”. The fire alert was received at 6.17 am on Sunday.
