The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved India’s sixth semiconductor unit in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the upcoming plant will create 2,000 jobs and the previously approved five semiconductor units are under “rapid construction”. The production of the Jewar unit in Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority or YEIDA is likely to begin in 2027.
This plant will manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, PCs, and myriad of other devices that have display. It is designed to produce 20,000 wafers per month. The design output capacity is 36 million units per month.
India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant was launched under a collaboration with the United States in 2024 designed to produce chips for military applications and critical telecommunications. This initiative is supported by the India Semiconductor Mission and involves a strategic technology partnership between Bharat Semi, 3rdiTech, and the US Space Force.
